One of the things the meme does is remind us that our libraries and used book shops hold hundreds, even thousands, of quality crime fiction reads.So this week's poll in the right hand column asks you to check when the book you are currently reading was first published.
If you mainly buy new books to read, then it is likely the book was recently published.
If you mainly borrow from the library, then it is likely to be older (but not necessarily).
So here is some of what you could cover in your comment:
- title and author of the book
- date of first publication
- whether it has been reprinted etc.
Currently, as part of the Agatha Christie Reading Challenge, in which I am reading the books in the order in which they were first published, I am reading PARKER PYNE INVESTIGATES by Agatha Christie. It was first published in 1934, and the flyleaf records its history in Fontana Books with 5 reprintings between 1962 -1974. I bought my copy for $2 at a second hand market.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading two books both published in 2008 - A CARRION DEATH by Michael Stanley and DANCING WITH THE HANGMAN by Martin Edwards.
ReplyDeleteMore than three quarters of what I read would be 'recently published' (say within the last 10-15 years). You got me re-reading Christie and I've dabbled around with some other classics but my preference is for reasonably current stuff.
DANCING WITH THE HANGMAN is a book I've meant to get to, but simply haven't yet Bernadette. I'll be interested to see what you think.
ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading now was originally published in the early 90s, and has been reprinted, but as far as I know hasn't been reedited. Some of her earlier books have been reedited and then republished though so it might still happen.

ReplyDeleteRight now I'm reading an earlier Martin Edwards mystery--THE COFFIN TRAIL--published in 2004. I checked it out from the library last week and am enjoying it very much.

I'm reading A morning for flamingoes by James Lee Burke (from my local public library) - paperback ed. published in 2005, but originally published 1992. I read his books in any order I can get them, which makes for some confusion about Robicheaux's family life!
