Synopsis (author site)

First published : 2013 Allen & Unwin, Australia; 2013 St Martin’s Press / Minotaur

A woman dies in her sleep in a houseboat on the Thames; the apparent cause of death, an unflued gas heater. It all seems straightforward, but DI Kathy Kolla isn't convinced.

Unfortunately both Kathy and DCI Brock are up against an aggressive new Commander who seems to have a different agenda, opposing their investigation in favour of emerging technologies over the traditional policing methods. Coppers like Brock and Kolla who have reservations are being squeezed out.

To make matters worse, there's a new Task Force moving in on their patch, and a brutal killer, Butcher Jack Bragg, to be tracked down and caught. It's one of Brock and Kolla's bloodiest investigations yet.
In this heart-thumping new novel Brock and Kolla are under pressure; it's a clash between the menacing ever-present eye of computer surveillance versus the explosive threat of a man with a meat cleaver and a grudge.

The Raven's Eye is published in Australia by Allen and Unwin, http://www.allenandunwin.com, and in the USA by St Martin's Press / Minotaur, http://us.macmillan.com/minotaur.aspx.

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2013

Many crime fiction bloggers write a summary post at the end of each month listing what they've read, and some, like me, even go as far as naming their pick of the month.

This meme is an attempt to aggregate those summary posts.
It is an invitation to you to write your own summary post for December 2013, identify your crime fiction best read of the month, and add your post's URL to the Mr Linky below.
If Mr Linky does not appear for you, leave the URL in a comment and I will add it myself.

You can list all the books you've read in the past month on your post, even if some of them are not crime fiction, but I'd like you to nominate your crime fiction pick of the month.

That will be what you will list in Mr Linky too -
e.g.
ROSEANNA, Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo - MiP (or Kerrie)

You are welcome to use the image on your post and it would be great if you could link your post back to this post on MYSTERIES in PARADISE.

What I read in October 2013

Another good month: 3 Australian authors, one NZ author, and a couple of Agatha Christie's.
Mostly library books this time, which just shows how good our South Australian library system is.
My pick of the month is TRACES OF RED by NZ author Paddy Richardson.

Synopsis (Penguin Australia)

Rebecca Thorne is a successful television journalist, but her world is thrown into turmoil when her Saturday night programme is axed because of falling ratings. Not only will she lose her job but her big story on the convicted triple murderer Connor Bligh, whom Rebecca believes is innocent, has to be abandoned.

Rebecca's lover Joe, a married man and the barrister representing Bligh, also thinks Bligh is innocent – or does he? And if he loves Rebecca so much, why is he prepared to cast her off?

Meanwhile Bligh languishes in jail, convicted of three brutal murders and continuing to protest his innocence. He's clearly not a saint – but did he do it? Rebecca refuses to let the matter lie.

Paddy Richardson's fourth novel is psychological crime fiction at its best.

What I read in September 2013

A good mixture of books this month, Australian authors, Kindle versions, audio books, and new-to-me authors.
My best read was not crime fiction.

My crime fiction pick of the month was shared by an Australian cozy and a British crime fiction classic.

UNNATURAL HABITS by Kerry Greenwood is the 2012 Phryne Fisher novel while A DARK ADAPTED EYE by Barbara Vine was the first of Ruth Rendell's novels published under this pseudonym.

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2013

A good reading month with a great variety, including a couple that were not crime fiction.
I used my Kindle a lot, and I am convinced it speeds my reading up.

I got a lot closer to completing the 2013 Global Reading Challenge too.

I had 3 books I couldn't pick between for Pick of the Month:
DEADLY HARVEST by  Michael Stanley
THE LAST POLICEMAN by Ben H. Winters
THE GHOST RIDERS OF ORDEBEC by Fred Vargas

What I read in June 2013

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2013

A nice solid reading month, 11 books read, a couple of promising new Australian authors, three audio books, and some top notch British fiction.
My pick of the month was THE LEWIS MAN by Peter May which admittedly I listened to rather than read.
It is the second in the Lewis trilogy. My review is here.

What I read in May 2013

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2013

Another productive month with some really worthwhile and satisfying reads. Some new Aussie authors to try too.
My pick of the month was TRUST YOUR EYES by Linwood Barclay
The author, a Canadian, has been a favourite of mine for some years, and in fact I have another of his titles on my shelves right now.

Synopsis (author's website)

A schizophrenic man spends his days and nights on a website called Whirl360, believing he’s employed by the CIA to store the details of every town and city in the world in his head. Then one day, he sees something that shouldn’t be there: a woman being murdered behind a window on a New York street. Suddenly Thomas has more to deal with than just his delusions, as he gets drawn into a deadly conspiracy.

From Orion Books
Map-obsessed Thomas spends his days and nights on a virtual tour of the world through his computer screen, believing he must store the details of every town and city in his head. Then one day, while surfing a street view program, he sees something that shouldn't be there: a woman being murdered behind a window on a New York street.
When Thomas tells his brother Ray what he has witnessed, Ray humours him with a half-hearted investigation - until he realises Thomas may have stumbled onto a deadly conspiracy, which puts them both in danger...
With enough suspense to rival a Hitchcock film, this is a thriller with edge.

What I read in April 2013

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2013

Another good reading month, with a few new-to-me Aussie authors, and some good British crime fiction.

My pick of the month is  DEAD WATER by Ann Cleeves
Jimmy Perez is back!

When the body of journalist Jerry Markham is found outside the house of the Fiscal down at the Marina, young Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted in to head up the investigation. Since the death of his fiancée, Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out the loop, but his interest in this new case is stirred and he decides to help the inquiry. It emerges that Markham was chasing a story. One that must have been - for someone - significant enough to warrant his death…

BLACK SKIES by Arnaldur Indridason was a close runner up.

1 March 2013

What I read in February 2013

February is one of those months that simply skates by, but it was a good reading month for me, with lots of Australian authors read.
11 books altogether, tow audio books, 6 Australian authors and another book set in Australia, 4 library books.

My pick of the month was THE MISTAKE by Wendy James but as you'll see from the list a few other close contenders: THE BAT by Jo Nesbo,  THE BETRAYAL by Y.A.Erskine, and  DEGREES OF CONNECTION by Jon Cleary
THE MISTAKE was another fascinating read from Australian author Wendy James. (I read WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? last year).

Jodie Garrow kept a secret about her first baby, Elsa Mary, for twenty four years. When her teenage daughter Hannah breaks her leg on a school excursion she is hospitalised by chance at the very hospital where Jodie gave birth to her first child. Hannah shares a genetic characteristic with the earlier baby, and by chance a nurse at the hospital recognises this and then recognises Jodie. Thus begins the chain of events that leads to the investigation of what happened to baby Elsa Mary Evans.
