Best Crime Fiction Reads 2008 -2011

I have collected best crime fiction reads for the past 4 years now from a range of participants.
In that time  154 contributors have suggested 1521 titles

2008, 40 contributors 396 titles
2009, 56 contributors 541 titles
2010, 23 contributors 220 titles
2011, 35 contributors 364 titles

If you'd like to check previous years, here they are. Just click on the image.

2008

I've chosen the top reads from each year and aggregated them. There are 24 books on the list.
The number at the end of the line is the number of votes the book got.
Stieg Larsson was not mentioned by 2011 contributors, there is no doubt in my mind he would still be there if he was alive and writing.
I'm pleased to see some Australian authors making it into this list too. ***
Interesting too to see some names other than Larsson repeated: Johan Theorin, Megan Abbott, Arnaldur Indridason.
Translated titles abound too ++ (nearly half the list)

So what have you missed out on reading? - as you can see I have 3 to go.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larsson    16 ++

Sunday Salon - 13 Feb 2011 - book recommendations

Book recommendations are something I'm never short of - what to read next I mean, what should go on my list of books to look out for.  Getting time to read them is another story.

Where do you get your recommendations from?
Most of mine come from online friends, from lists and "rooms" that I belong to, from blog posts, and award short lists.
I don't always add a title to my lists straight away. But then I will see a title listed for the second or third time, or read a review of it, or it comes up as a discussion book somewhere, and I know I must get hold of a copy some time.

Earlier this year I had a post Best Crime Fiction Reads for 2010. I had been collecting suggestions in late 2010 and 23 fellow bloggers suggested 220 titles, 173 different ones altogether, which I listed here.
I did the same thing in 2009, and if you look at lists like these you'll never be stuck for new books to look out for.

Another place to find recommendations: Crime Fiction Alphabet.
This is a meme running here every week, and anyone can join in at any stage.
This week participants are suggesting books or authors related to the letter F.
Check out what was listed last week for the letter E. Authors included Ethel Lina White, Rhys Bowen, Edgar Wallace, Barry Eisler, Margaret Erskine, R. J. Ellory, Ruth Rendell, Martin Edwards, George Muller, G.M. ford, Carli HIassan, Randy Wayne White, David Liss, William Deverell, and Clare Francis

TBRN (To Be Read Next)
  • now - FROZEN TRACKS, Ake Edwardson
  • then - D-E-D DEAD! , Geoffrey McGeachin.
  • then - BOUND, Vanda Symon
  • now on Kindle - OPERATION NAPOLEON, Arnaldur Indridason
  • now on audio - DIED IN THE WOOL, Ngaio Marsh
  • next Agatha Christie - MURDER IS EASY

Best Crime Fiction Read in 2010 - the top titles

Since late 2010 I have been collecting best reads in crime fiction. Many thanks to the 23 commenters who have suggested 220 titles.

Below is the first distillation, 7 books that have been mentioned more than twice.

9 - GUNSHOT ROAD, Adrian Hyland (my rating 5)
6 - THE DARKEST ROOM , Johan Theorin (my rating 5)
5 - HYPOTHERMIA, Arnaldur Indridason (my rating 5)
4 - TRUTH, Peter Temple (my rating 5)
3 - THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, Stieg Larsson (my rating 4.7)
3 - THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST, Stieg Larsson (my rating 4.6)
3 - THIRTEEN HOURS, Deon Meyer (my rating 4.8)

I am more than delighted with the acclamation for these authors, but in particular for Australian authors Adrian Hyland, recommended by 9 out of 23 participants, and Peter Temple, recommended by 4.
For me it affirms that Australian writers are a force to be reckoned with.

Interesting too that of the other 5, all are translated crime fiction, and 4 are Scandinavian.

In the middle of the year I collected a list of best crime fiction reads for 2010 from readers of this blog.
Hyland's popularity has made its running in the latter part of the year.

Tomorrow I'll will publish the tops in authors and then sometime next week the full list.

Think about your best Crime Fiction reads in 2010

In the middle of the year I collected a list of best crime fiction reads for 2010 from readers of this blog.

Now I want to put together a definitive list for the year.
The rules are simple - you just have to have read the books in 2010, regardless of when they were published.

You can give me a list of up to 10 or so, in a comment to this post. (I'm not fussed about there being more than 10, I'm going to have problems shortening my list too)

I need title and author.

If you are listing best reads for the year on your blog, by all means leave the URL of your blog post too (as well as a summary list in the comment).

I will write a summary post of those early in the new year - Let's make 4 January the deadline for getting your comments in.
Feel free to use the image to the right in your blog post and to link it back to this one.

What I read in October

11 books this month - must be the extra day :-)
5 were on my Kindle, which is I suppose a measure of how useful I'm finding it.
3 were Agatha Christie short story collections.
No Australian authors this time unfortunately.

  1. 4.4, DISCOUNT NOIR, edited Patricia Abbott & Steve Weddle (30 October) - Kindle
  2. 4.8, THE NIGHT OF THE MI'RAJ, Zoe Ferraris (28 October)
  3. 4.3, THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BEST BRITISH CRIME 7, 2010, edit.Maxim Jakubowski (24 October) - Kindle
  4. 4.6, NECESSARY AS BLOOD, Deborah Crombie (14 October)
  5. 4.4, WHILE THE LIGHT LASTS, Agatha Christie (12 October) - Kindle
  6. 4.5, FEAR THE WORST, Linwood Barclay (11 October)
  7. 4.3, THE LABOURS OF HERCULES, Agatha Christie (10 October)- Kindle
  8. 4.3, THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN, Mitch Albom (5 Oct)
  9. 5.0, BLACKLANDS, Belinda Bauer (4 Oct) - Kindle
  10. 4.1, MISS MARPLE: COMPLETE SHORT STORIES, Agatha Christie (2 Oct)
  11. 4.0, SINGLE & SINGLE, John Le Carre - audio (1 Oct)
My pick of the month was book 100 for the year: BLACKLANDS by Belinda Bauer.
In my review I wrote: It is not often that the suspense in a book literally gets to me, but BLACKLANDS almost gave me palpitations at the end. I really can't reveal any more, other than to highly recommend this debut novel.

Interesting picture emerging

In the Answer Garden post I ran this week, an interesting picture is emerging from the titles people have been adding.
Truth has hit the front, added in by 3 people
Then comes Bleed For Me, Dead Point, and Gunshot Road each on 2 - all Australian authors so far.

Then another 13 titles.
Only two are Scandinavian, only 2 are translated (I think). Leave a comment if you think I am wrong.

Note: what is below is only an image! not the actual Answer Garden.
It is not too late to enter your own nomination. Do it here.

What is the best crime fiction title you've read this year?

I'm playing with a cool tool I found at Answer Garden.
You have only 20 characters so just the title please.
If you submit a title somebody else has used, it will "count" the entries up.

What is the best crime fiction title you have read this year?... at AnswerGarden.ch.

Best crime fiction so far in 2010 - the titles

What should you be reading?

In the last 10 days I have been collecting lists of best 5-10 reads from friends of this blog.
These are just the best books they have read this year regardless of year of publication.

15 or so contributors have suggested about 110 titles. If you'd like to check their comments go here.
Many thanks to Kay, Jose Ignacio Escribano, Vanda Symon, Books Please, Becky, Cathy, Rob Kitchin, Barbara Fister, Bernadette, Uriah Robinson, Margot Kinberg, Laura Root, Maxine Clarke, and Gautami Tripathy

I have marked the titles that were suggested more than once with ** (twice), *** (three times) etc. There weren't that many duplicates, which attests to the range of quality crime fiction titles we have to choose from.
But the stand out is THE DARKEST ROOM by Johan Theorin which was suggested a remarkable 6 times.

Sunday Salon: My April reading list, and my tops so far for 2010

I did quite a bit of travel in April, and long flights between Australia and the rest of the world are very conducive to lots of reading.

I also found that my Kindle was more than worth its weight. Not everything that I read was on the Kindle as I still have many made-from-trees books on my shelves (at least 200 that I haven't read) but I was able to cut my books-in-the-bag load down to just 2 or 3.

As you can see from the ratings on the list below, I had a pretty good month too.
  1. 4.3, HIDE & SEEK, Ian Rankin (30 April)- audio
  2. 4.3, WINTER OF SECRETS, Vicki Delany (29 April)
  3. 4.7, CONTAINMENT, Vanda Symon (27 April)
  4. 4.2, DARK WINTER, William Dietrich (24 April)- Kindle
  5. 4.8, THE PANIC ZONE, Rick Mofina (17 April) - Kindle
  6. 4.5, TIED UP IN TINSEL, Ngaio Marsh (17 April)
  7. 4.6, FREEZE FRAME, Peter May (13 April)- Kindle
  8. 5.0, BLEED FOR ME, Michael Robotham (12 April)
  9. 4.0, TAROKO GORGE, Jacob Ritari (11 April)- Kindle
  10. 4.5, DEEP WATER, Peter Corris (9 April)
  11. 5.0, THE MAN FROM BEIJING, Henning Mankell (6 April)- Kindle
  12. 4.4, RUMPOLE and the PENGE BUNGALOW MURDERS, John Mortimer (3 April)
  13. 4.3, FORBIDDEN FRUIT, Kerry Greenwood (1 April) - Kindle
The result was that I've done pretty well with a number of my reading challenges, and actually taken on another. See the right hand column for summaries and links.
