Today's blogging host A Library is a hospital for the mind - Sarah is an enthusiastic reader of Agatha Christie and a participant in the Agatha Christie Reading Challenge and our monthly carnival.

Sarah hosted the tour on Day 6 and we are pleased to welcome her back.
In a recent post about her "fall into reading" goals Sarah wrote

I plan to finish out the Agatha Christie Blog Tour, which ends on September 30. I have a final post set to run on the 29th. I'm very excited about this particular post. In addition to this I plan to finish out the year by participating in the monthly Agatha Christie Reading Challenge, which means if I am to stay on target I need to read at least one Agatha Christie mystery in September, October, November and December.

I know Sarah has been reading Agatha Christie's Autobiography  because she has been using quotes from the book in her Tuesday Teaser posts.

Agatha Christie Blog Tour 2010 - Day 28

Today's tour host is Joyfully Retired.
Margot was one of the first to join the Agatha Christie Reading Challenge and her blog was the featured blog in our last Blog Carnival.

Like me Margot is trying to read the Agatha Christie titles in order, and we are more or less at the same point in our journey (we seem to have a slight disagreement on our lists) but we are both around 1935. We are both claiming 18 books.

On her post for Agatha Christie's birthday Margot wrote
"I will be one of the stops on the tour, on September 28th. You may recall that last year I was fortunate enough to snag an Interview with Miss Marple. Since then, she and I have become good friends and now Jane has invited me to attend one of her special Tuesday Night Murder Club meetings. Agatha Christie Blog Tour 2010 - Day 26

Our guest blogger today is Roberta at Books to the Ceiling

Roberta's post is titled: “An ingenious and amusing conceit!” – The Labors of Hercules, by Agatha Christie
When you read the post, you will understand why Roberta also says it was a "labour of  love".

Not only has she reviewed each of the stories in the book, but she has given us links to each of the original labours of Hercules, and images for each.

At the end of her post she comments
These stories work beautifully as cunning little puzzles and masterpieces of misdirection, but in a larger sense, they recreate an entire world. We are back in the early years of the twentieth century. England retains a certain smugness regarding its perceived superior status in the world. The aristocracy still holds sway, but the nouveau riche are fast encroaching on their territory. The revolution in psychiatry and the introduction of psychoanalysis, so revolutionary at the beginning of the century,  still have considerable influence on the way human nature is perceived.

I am very definitely inspired to tackle THE LABOURS OF HERCULES soon - I've bought a copy for my Kindle - and I'll be consulting Roberta's post for guidance.

Beth is attempting to read Agatha Christie's books from the 1920s in order of publication. Here is her progress report.
Beth says
Agatha Christie, the great mystery novelist, has long been one of my favorite writers. I discovered her when I was about fifteen...  I'm a sucker for publication order. There's something about it that satisfies all my inner "J" (that's the "J" that comes at the end of the Myers-Briggs personality type test) the same J'ness that loved doing shelf-reads when I worked in a library. I love seeing the order of things. In the case of an author's work, I love seeing the order in which they wrote their books, especially if they wrote a lot of them. That doesn't mean I will always go back and read their books in a certain order, or that I won't have favorites I return to disproportionately, but it's such fun to note the development of characters, themes, images and ideas when you read an author from start to finish.

Beth has celebrated the characters Tommy and Tuppence in a very engaging way. So do visit  Endless Books today.

Birdie has recently joined the Agatha Christie Reading Challenge and says that she is very glad to have found a challenge that justifies her consumption of Agatha Christie novels this year. She calls it "My reason for Madness".

Agatha Christie Blog Tour 2010 - Day 22

Today the blog tour takes us to visit Margaret in the north of England at Books Please. Margaret and I could easily swap books if we lived a lot closer - our tastes in reading are very similar!

Margaret is a fellow traveller on the Agatha Christie Reading Challenge and a regular contributor to the Blog Carnival. Margaret is reading Agatha Christie novels as she comes across them and her current count shows that she has reviewed 19 titles.

She is currently reading Agatha Christie's Autobiography.

Agatha Christie Blog Tour 2010 - Day 20

Vanda lives in Dunedin and when she is not writing Crime novels she's busy being a Domestic Goddess and queen of her household..
The first in my Sam Shephard detective series, Overkill, was published by Penguin New Zealand in 2007. The Ringmaster was released in August 2008, and Containment in December 2009. The German translation of Overkill, Ein Harmloser Mord was published by Blanvalet in October 2008.

Vanda's true passion is the writings of Ngaio Marsh, but I suspect Agatha Christie comes a close second.
Vanda is a very busy lady as you'll see when you visit Overkill.
Earlier this month she was putting the finishing touches on her post grad thesis, posted off the manuscript for her fourth Sam Shephard novel. She can often be found interviewing authors and reviewing books on local New Zealand radio.

In July Vanda reviewed Black Coffee, an Agatha Christie play that had been "novelised".
Today Vanda talks about what she learnt at dinner from fellow crime fiction novelist Val McDermid.

Recently Norman took part in the celebrations at Greenway, and sampled Delicious Death.
At the beginning of September he blogged
I shall be attending "Matthew Prichard and John Curran in conversation" which I note is sold out, as are some of the much more expensive celebratory events. In the current recession this is surely a sign of the enduring popularity of Agatha Christie, and the affection in which she is held by the people of Devon as well as the thousands who travel from all over the world for this festival, and to visit the author's beautiful holiday home at Greenway.

In the last week or so I've been running a poll about which actress best fits people's idea of Miss Marple.
I did something similar last year (and admitedly gave more choices) but Joan Hickson was still the clear favourite. People have obviously got more used to Julia McKenzie, and a few more voted for Margaret Rutherford.

The character continues to speak to readers precisely because, in those quiet moments at the end of the day or when a difficult decision needs to be made, each of us wishes for our own Miss Marple to give clear and unequivocal advice. Someone older and wiser who understands that, changing times notwithstanding, the human heart does not change so very much. Love, jealousy, greed, anger, revenge — these are characteristics that endure, whether it be on a Caribbean island, among the tombs in Luxor, on the Devon coast or in an English village much like St Mary Mead. And, perhaps most important of all, because we recognise what Miss Marple’s companion, Cherry, says in Nemesis to be no more than the truth: “Good people are scarce.” In art, as in life.

I had my own attempt to list why Agatha Christie has survived so well, but Kate Mosse said it so well.

Agatha Christie Blog Tour 2010 - Day 16

Recently Bernadette at Reactions to Reading had this to say of Jose Ignacio:

Delicious Death: Jane Asher's murderously rich chocolate cake
Noted cake-maker Asher says she was inspired by a passage in Christie's 50th novel, the Miss Marple tale A Murder is Announced, in which émigré housekeeper Mitzi bakes a chocolate cake for Dora Bunner's birthday tea.
The passage reads: "'It will be rich, rich, of a melting richness! And on top I will put the icing - chocolate icing - I make him so nice - and write on it Good Wishes. see also

The cake will be served at Greenway in Devon throughout Agatha Christie Week

Jane Asher describes it as
"an intense, forbidding dark Belgian chocolate centre which is lifted by the unexpected sharp zing of its brandy-soaked cherry and ginger filling.

"The glorious assault on the senses doesn't end there: the cake is decorated with flecks of pure gold, sprinklings of crystallised rose and violet petals, and swirls of ganache piping."
