Best Crime Fiction Reads 2008 -2011

I have collected best crime fiction reads for the past 4 years now from a range of participants.
In that time  154 contributors have suggested 1521 titles

2008, 40 contributors 396 titles
2009, 56 contributors 541 titles
2010, 23 contributors 220 titles
2011, 35 contributors 364 titles

If you'd like to check previous years, here they are. Just click on the image.

2008

I've chosen the top reads from each year and aggregated them. There are 24 books on the list.
The number at the end of the line is the number of votes the book got.
Stieg Larsson was not mentioned by 2011 contributors, there is no doubt in my mind he would still be there if he was alive and writing.
I'm pleased to see some Australian authors making it into this list too. ***
Interesting too to see some names other than Larsson repeated: Johan Theorin, Megan Abbott, Arnaldur Indridason.
Translated titles abound too ++ (nearly half the list)

So what have you missed out on reading? - as you can see I have 3 to go.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larsson    16 ++
THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE by Stieg Larsson    15 ++

Best Crime Fiction Reads for 2011 - it's gonna take some time

Today I have begun the task of aggregating people's lists for their best crime fiction reads for 2011 as per the suggestions made so far.

With more than 40 lists of suggestions I've realised what a task it is going to be, complicated by the fact that some are just for books published in 2011 and others are for books read during 2011 regardless of publication date.

What I will produce eventually is
  • a list of all titles suggested
  • a list that shows which titles have been suggested multiple times
  • a list of all authors
  • a list that shows which authors have been suggested multiple times
Thank you to all who have submitted your lists. I'm sorry it is going to take so long to come up with a result, but I hope it will be worth the effort when it happens.

Reminder: I'm collecting your best crime fiction reads for 2011

As I've done for the past 2 or 3 years,  I will be "collecting" titles again this year and then aggregating them, and publishing lists, early in 2012.
I've decided that I will collect in two ways:
  • If you write a post on your own blog that lists your best crime fiction reads, then you can simply add the URL to the Mr Linky below and I will visit your site and collect the titles.
  • Your alternative is to add your list as a comment to this post. Other comments appear on my initial post at the beginning of December and I will collect them up too.
The books you choose need not have been published in 2011, but need to come under the category of crime fiction.

You choose how many titles are in your list - I'll accept any number of titles up to 20. (you might like to decide a cut off point in your ratings - mine might have to have a rating of 4.9 or above, but I need to have a serious think about that)

Please feel free to use this icon on your blog post, to advertise the meme, and encourage others to add their contributions to this page.

Remember, the Mr Linky below is for the URL of your blog post, not the titles themselves.
If you don't have a blog post just list the titles and authors in a comment.

"Collecting" will close on January 7.

Important: how to find this post when you are ready to add your list - look for the icon in the right hand margin.

Collecting your best reads for 2011

It is just a tad early to make pronouncements I think - who knows, the killer-read for the year might be just around the corner, but I know many of us in crime fiction land are beginning to think about our top 5, or 10, or even 20 reads for the year.

So this blog post is just to let you know I will be "collecting" titles again this year and then aggregating them, and publishing lists, early in 2012.

I've decided that I will collect in two ways:
  • If you write a post on your own blog that lists your best crime fiction reads, then you can simply add the URL to the Mr Linky below and I will visit your site and collect the titles.

Best Crime Fiction Reads 2011 - so far - authors with multiple mentions

This is the second of my posts collating the suggestions that came in as a result of my Mid-Way Report post.
People were able to list titles regardless of when they were published

17 participants have suggested over 140 individual titles.
On Saturday I listed titles that were mentioned more than once.
Today's list consists of the authors that were mentioned more than once.
There aren't as many of them as I had expected.

The standout author was Jo Nesbo with 4 books listed:
  • THE LEOPARD

  • THE SNOWMAN
Here are the other authors mentioned twice:
  • Domingo Villar:
    DEATH ON A GALICIAN SHORE

  • Joy Fielding:
    CHARLEY'S WEB
    WHISPERS AND LIES

Best Crime Fiction Reads 2011: mid way report

What are the best crime fiction titles you've read in 2011?

So far this year I've read 82 books.
I review them all and have a record of them on 2011 Reviews
Over one third of the books I've read have scored a rating of 4.7 and above.
I don't think that is necessarily because I am generous in my ratings, but because I tend to read books I think I will like. Time is too short to spend it on books I know I will hate.

I base my selections on blurbs, listings for awards, and recommendations/reviews from fellow bloggers.

For my best reads so far in 2011 I have chosen books that I have given a rating of 4.8 or above. That gives a list of about 15 or so.

5.0, BURY YOUR DEAD, Louise Penny
5.0, THE WRECKAGE, Michael Robotham
5.0, A THOUSAND CUTS, Simon Lelic
5.0, THE RULE BOOK, Rob Kitchin
5.0, DEAD TOMORROW, Peter James
4.9, THE BRUTAL TELLING, Louise Penny
4.9, BAD INTENTIONS, Karin Fossum
4.8, THE HANGING WOOD, Martin Edwards
4.8, KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES, Jussi Adler-Olsen
4.8, AN UNCERTAIN PLACE, Fred Vargas
4.8, COLD JUSTICE, Katherine Howell
4.8, THE LEOPARD, Jo Nesbo
4.8, CROOKED LETTER, CROOKED LETTER, Tom Franklin
4.8, BOUND, Vanda Symon
4.8, SILENT VOICES, Ann Cleeves
4.8, THE SWEETNESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PIE, Alan Bradley

I am interested in knowing what your best crime fiction reads so far this year have been.
Please list up to 15 of them in a comment. I will collate the lists and publish in a later post (on about July 15)
If you'd like to use my logo in a post on your own blog, please feel free to do so, as well as providing a link back to this post.

Sunday Salon: 26 June 2011, a new Crime Fiction Reading Challenge

Good morning fellow Sunday Saloners.

MYSTERIES in PARADISE is the home of the Crime Fiction Alphabet Reading Challenge.
The 2011 edition of this popular meme is entering its final letters: X, Y, and Z.
It has been very successful with an average of 15 or so participants each week suggesting books to read and authors to find.

I have decided to follow it up this year with a new challenge: Crime Fiction on a EuroPass
These challenges don't necessarily involve participants in new reading for the challenge itself (although a list of books that you'd like to read could be a result), but allow you to point to books you've already read, or reviews you've already written, or to dabble in a bit of research.

Although the challenge relates to crime fiction reading, you don't have to be a crime fiction addict like I am to participate. Crime Fiction on a EuroPass begins on August 1. The blog post has a Mr Linky where you can sign up.

Check out the countries we'll visit in the 12 week schedule.

As we approach the middle of the year begin thinking about your best crime fiction reads so far for 2011.
I'll be collecting lists here on MYSTERIES in PARADISE from July 1. I'll put up a special post about it and several reminders.

Other posts this week:
News & Headlines
TBRN (To Be Read Next)
  • next - THE KILLER'S ART, Maria Jungstedt
  • next on Kindle - VIOLENT EXPOSURE, Katherine Howell
  • now on audio - STIFF UPPER LIP, P.G. Wodehouse
  • next Agatha Christie: ONE, TWO, BUCKLE MY SHOE

My reading - May 2011

I'm still travelling - well, temporarily stationary in Abu Dhabi - so the reviews for most of my reading for May 2011 are not on my blog yet but here is the summary. The reviews will be done progressively over the weeks following my arrival home at the end of next week.

  1. 4.4, THE VANISHING OF KATHERINA LINDEN, Helen Grant (29 May)
  2. 4.8, SILENT VOICES, Ann Cleeves (27 May)
  3. 5.0, THE WRECKAGE, Michael Robotham (25 May)
  4. 4.8, THE HANGING WOOD, Martin Edwards (20 May)
  5. 4.6, SAD CYPRESS, Agatha Christie (15 May)
  6. 3.8, DIAMOND EYES, A.A. Bell (13 May)
  7. 3.5, WHAT WAS LOST, Catherine O'Flynn (9 May)
  8. 4.1, LIQUORICE TWISTS, Dorte Jakobsen (9 May)
  9. 4.7, WHITE SKY, BLACK ICE, Stan Jones (9 May)
  10. 4.8, KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES, Jussi Adler-Olsen (5 May)
  11. 4.5, VENGEANCE ROAD, Rick Mofina (4 May)
  12. 4.4, EYE OF THE RED TSAR, Sam Eastland (2 May)
You can see there are some good reads on my list including 3 books that scored 4.8 that must go on your TBR.
Michael Robotham's latest THE WRECKAGE is my pick of the month though, and among my best reads for the year.

I'm travelling pretty well in my challenges - currently reading the final one for the Canadian reading challenge, and on my 72nd book for the year.

15 April 2011

My top crime fiction reads so far for 2011

It would be nice to say this is my "top 10" or "top 15" or top "20", but numbers don't always work out so simply do they?

I do try, as I record my ratings, to put the books in a sort of ranked list but the truth is that these are all good reads, some just a little better than others.
They are, pretty well, all fairly recently published books except for THE MAN WHO WENT UP IN SMOKE.
But they also include quite a number of translated books and there's a mixture of Canadian, English, American, and Australian authors. There are police procedurals, amateur sleuths, and a couple with historical settings.
What I'm finding don't rate so highly with me at present are the cozies. They do come high in the next batch though. See all I've read this year at 2011 Reviews
There really are few duds amongst the lot.

How many of the list below have you read?

5.0, BURY YOUR DEAD, Louise Penny
5.0, A THOUSAND CUTS, Simon Lelic
5.0, THE RULE BOOK, Rob Kitchin
4.9, THE BRUTAL TELLING, Louise Penny

4.8, BOUND, Vanda Symon
4.8, THE SWEETNESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PIE, Alan Bradley
4.7, DYING GASP, Leighton Gage
4.7, PRIME CUT, Alan Carter
4.7, WYATT, Garry Disher
